About JREC
ORGANISATION

The JREC is constituted as an independent ethics committee through the Deanery of University of Zimbabwe Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (UZ-FMHS) and the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.

Staff and students of the UZ-FMHS and the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.
Investigators from other institutions who wish to carry out research at the UZ-FMHS and at the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals

FUNCTIONS OF JREC

To ensure that all research conducted under the auspices of the University of Zimbabwe-Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and at the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals meets the highest scientific and ethical standards.

  • To ensure that all research being conducted at the University of Zimbabwe-College of Health Sciences and the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals meet the highest scientific and ethical standards.
  • Ensuring that all protocols submitted to the JREC have a favourable risk benefit ratio for research subjects, respect the rights, dignity, and autonomy of research participants, and that there is equitable distribution of benefits and burdens of research.
  • Monitoring on-going research activities at the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals and the UZ-FMHS and to ensure that ethical standards are maintained throughout the course of the investigations.
  • Recommending policies and procedures governing ethical conduct of research at the UZ-FMHS and the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals .
  • Acting as a resource on matters of research ethics for the UZ-FMHS and the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospital.

AUTHORITY

The authority for decisions made by the JREC is delegated jointly by the Board of the UZ-CHS through the Dean of the UZ-FMHS and the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals through the Clinical Director. JREC is invested with the authority and responsibility to:

  • Approve research protocols
  • Suggest modifications in research protocols
  • Disapprove research protocols
  • Monitor on-going research projects
  • Suspend or terminate any on-going research being carried out within the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals and the UZ-FMHS
  • Withdraw approval of previously approved research that is not being conducted as approved

COMPOSITION OF THE JREC
The JREC consists of at least ten members from the following areas:

  1. The Dean of the UZ-FMHS is the Chairperson of the Committee.
  2. The Incumbent Deputy Dean of the UZ-FMHS is a member of the Committee.
  3. The Incumbent Clinical Director of Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals is a member of the Committee.
  4. Three members (from Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals and the UZ-FMHS who have broad expertise in the scientific methodology, health science research, and medicine.
  5. Four members who are knowledgeable in research ethics.
  6. One member who is knowledgeable in relevant law.
  7. One community representative, who has no affiliation with the two institutions, does not have any prior health scientific expertise but represents the interests and concerns of ordinary members of communities.
  8. The JREC shall have fairly adequate representation from both genders.

ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT

Administrative and Secretarial support for all JREC activities is provided by the UZ-FMHS through the Dean’s Office.
